How My 91-year-old Mother Beat COVID

This shocked me to the core. My 91yo mother had been fully vaccinated five months previously with the Moderna COVID vaccine. She wasn't supposed to get COVID, right?

Now we know otherwise. But I will not wax cynical here--I will just give the facts.

It was I who got sick first, eleven days ago. (I am 63 and have chronic fatigue/immune issues, so have chosen not to have the vaccine.) I had gone to church alone--my family was on a jet boat trip--and I worshipped next to a friend who asked to sit with me. We were in close proximity with each other for nearly an hour, talking. I found out later that she had been fully vaccinated.

That was Sunday, September 5, the day before Labor Day. That afternoon our extended family (16 people) gathered for a meal, which Mom and I hosted.

On Monday morning I felt nauseated. I walked outside briefly in the fresh air and it subsided, but by the afternoon it returned, along with general malaise, followed by a splitting headache, followed by fever of 100.6. No one in the household exhibited symptoms. (The next day my daughter and her children had similar but milder symptoms, and had probably gotten it from me.)

I concluded that I had caught the bug--whatever it was--at church, and my friend sitting beside me was the most likely one who transmitted it to me. We texted, and yes, she admitted she had been headachy for several days. (Why did she go to church??)

And she wanted to know if I was vaccinated, because "the Delta variant is going around, and for my own protection, I probably shouldn't be [around you]..."

Wait--WHO had made WHO sick here? And WHO had been vaccinated against COVID already?

That afternoon, September 6, around 2pm, as soon as I detected the fever, I turned to my store of prophylactic meds obtained through speakwithanmd.com, and took a dose of hydroxychloroquine as prescribed, twice that day. I also took 4 grams of Vitamin C, another 5000 IUs of Vitamin D, 50mg of zinc, and a teaspoon of colloidal silver. I also diffused essential oils and hydrogen peroxide. I went to bed in misery. My son went to Walgreens and Walmart looking for a home COVID test, but they were out. I stayed in bed with fitful sleep until 4:15 am, when I awoke aware that my fever had broken and the headache was gone. Wow! What a relief. I never had any respiratory involvement. The symptoms lasted no more than 24 hours, followed by a day of fatigue. At around 2pm my mother finally went for the COVID test at Bi-Mart, and I tested NEGATIVE for COVID--twice.

My local doctor suspected I had not had COVID since I had beat it down so fast. She said the Delta was making people very sick. Also, it should have shown on the home antigen test, which is 96% accurate. But she also said it would show up on the test if I was still symptomatic--which I wasn't by then. My fever had broken 6-8 hours before I tested. Could I have cleared the virus out of my nostrils that quickly, enough to show negative results? If it had been a PCR test, which is much more sensitive, it would definitely have shown up, but I didn't get a PCR test.

Then I found out that there were other folks at church who had contracted COVID the same Sunday I had gotten this "flu," including the pastor. This also fueled my doubts about my test results. (The in-person service was cancelled for the following Sunday.)

I had some lingering nausea and over-the-top emotional anxiety and irrational behavior on Wednesday and Thursday. I was upset easily by the reading I'd done on the net about vaccinated individuals spreading the variant, and the prospect of my getting sick AGAIN (if this wasn't COVID I had already) by other family members who were about to be vaccinated. By Saturday my argumentativeness caused my mom to say, "Dear, you need to let go of your anger." I didn't feel angry, but decided that if I seemed angry, that was just as bad, and I needed to chill. Just let.it.go. And I did. It took a couple days to repair the damage I had done, ask forgiveness, make things right.

My pastor shared that he knew someone whose COVID had triggered them into some bipolar symptoms. We also know a friend who had longterm emotional issues from COVID. More evidence that I had caught it as well.

Enter my mother, who is in amazingly-good health for her age, but is on b.p. meds, thus at risk for COVID; she had chosen to be vaccinated as soon as it was available, with the Moderna vaccine. On Tuesday Sept. 14, she went to a computer club for seniors in the morning, dutifully wearing her mask as always, and sneezed several times, holding it tightly to her face. (She feels she re-infected herself that way. It was a previously-used disposable mask.) By that afternoon she had a sore throat and felt sick, but didn't tell me until early the next morning, when she "felt fine."

But it didn't last long. This was Wednesday, Sept 15, and by 10am she was coughing, grumpy, and heading for bed. I started her on Ivermectin (prescribed to her by a telemed doctor for COVID prophylactic) and the same natural measures as above. She slept it off, and by the afternoon she was determined to give a talk at her camera club the next day. The initial treatment had worked well, but I wasn't sure she was done with this "cold."

On Thursday morning she texted me from her "granny house" (in our backyard) that she had changed her mind about giving the talk, as she didn't want to endanger a certain camera club member with her illness. She didn't disclose that she was feeling ill again, but by 10am I found her back in bed, coughing and miserable, and by 3pm she was running a fever of 100.6, complaining of a splitting headache and pains all over.  This sounded very familiar--it was the same temp I had had a week earlier, same headache, same malaise...but with the added respiratory congestion. I went into hyperdrive, found another test kit in town (Bi-Mart had run out--had to pay $10 more at a mom-and-pop pharmacy, bless them!)

And the test showed the second red line almost immediately after I inserted the swab into the liquid and it spread upwards into the testing paper. I then resumed the above protocol, adding quercetin and NAC as my naturopath had suggested, and bought a low-temp ultrasonic mist humidifier to use with hydrogen peroxide and colloidal silver on rotation.

By 8pm Mom's oxygen sats were hovering around 93%, but went up to 94% if she breathed deeply. I considered calling 911, but decided not to. What would they do? Not much, if she wasn't gasping for air. And they are short on staff, so she might not even get a bed at the hospital. So we all went to bed and prayed.

This morning, Friday Sept 17, at 7:15am, I walked out to her room, and there she was, scrubbing her toilet! "I'm feeling so much better! The fever broke hours ago, and my headache is gone!" She tired quickly and headed back to bed, coughing badly, where I am firmly keeping her for at least two days, taking her soups and nondairy smoothies and continuing her on the ivermectin until her supply runs out.

Conclusion: five months after receiving it, the Moderna vax didn't work very well against Delta, if it ever did. It doesn't even seem to have lessened her symptoms. If I did have it, my symptoms were fewer and milder than hers--though I'm younger and not on b/p meds, thus at lower risk.

I had imagined this morning that I might walk into her bedroom and find my mother dead in her bed. But you can't keep a good woman down :). Not this time, anyway.

Here are the sources I have relied on to be prepared for such a time as this. I thank God for these brave doctors who have cared too much for their patients to leave them to worsen and die, and have developed these early, at-home protocols. I believe they helped save my mother's life.
